Brand New
by Chris on Jan.02, 2008, under Internet and Media
Well, thank you, Stewart Brand, for doing a fine job of saying something that I’ve held to be true for a good long time: Good old stuff sucks.
This is part of the EDGE questions for 2008; “What did you change your mind about in 2007?” This is a web thing, I suppose, but some fine thinkers are involved, and their responses run the gamut from predictable (Sam Harris) to interesting (Richard Dawkins).
I recommend checking the rest of them out from the provided links. I’m on my way to work, but I think that this evening I’ll try to add my own “What did I change my mind about in 2007?” to it; if I can find one
A question of freedom.

Seen on a forum today:
Which is more free?
- that which ensures freedom or
- that which grants so much freedom that it permits denial of freedom
I know my perspective on this one, but I’m interested in hearing yours, before I weigh in myself.
Discuss.
In three languages?

Well, not so much. But I really do have nothing to say.
A quick sum-up:
Work: Active, rewarding, and busy. Friends: Hanging out with a bit more, which is good. School: Really iffy on Philosophy 250 — this is some wonky stuff, if you ask me.
The world: Fucked, man. Hypocrisy in Congress down south, media shutdown up here…
I’d rather not think about it.

I am obliged, upon actually tasting it in a quiet setting, to reverse my long-held distaste for Big Rock Traditional Ale. It is, in fact, quite tasty.
Also, this essay on academia and truth may be of interest to A) anyone who teaches amongst my readership (all of one person, as far as i know) and B) anyone that learns (Many, many more)
In other news, I finished my last exam today. I need 92% on it to get 90% in the course. Here’s hoping! My other grades seem to be in the A- to A range so far, but Pscyh, and Algorithms haven’t made any splash at all yet. We’ll see.
In case you skipped it, seriously: Read this. I’m not kidding.
