It’s key.

by Chris on Mar.22, 2006, under Events and General Thoughts

So, I just attended my first-ever keynote presentations, yesterday and this morning.  I can already see that there’s a lot of variation in delivery styles and value of content.  Yesterday had Joel Spolsky going over the importance of glitz in software development.  This is something I personally see a use for, but will admittedly be of limited use to my workplace software development, given that we develop the buried backend that makes the pretty output, not the output itself.

Today I was treated to what was, by and large, a discussion on the Apache project and differences in licensing models.  The former was a bit interesting — I didn’t know Apache had a database — but the latter was, at best, dull.  Licensing is interesting, don’t get me wrong, but I already know the basics of it, and it borders on religious for most people — they’re not going to change preferences based on a keynote.

An aside:  For the record, “LAN spigot” is the stupidest name for an RJ-45 outlet I’ve heard in ages (overheard just to my right, moments ago).

Well, the presentation I’m attending is about to start, so I should probably pay attention.  Later…

by keynote, do you mean motivational-style or just the big reason for the conference? the latter is just retarded. I think they are pointless.

LAN spigot… Wow… that’s almost synergistic. shakes head

Is there a log / board for the event?

  • Chris

charling: I assume you mean the motivational kind are pointless? Anyway, these are kind of in the middle ground. They’re directed at people who are involved at both the community and user levels, depending. In general I’d say they make the “informative” grade, but there is definitely some filler.

flowchart: There’s no board, per se, but the site at eclipsecon.org has a lot of info on the presentations.

Uhm… Qui est’ce’que vous etes, flowchart?

Oh, and the “LAN Spigot” name was used by someone who appeard to be the canonical Bearded Unix Geek. So no buzzword there, just out-of-date and/or excessively eccentric terminology.

I can’t believe you used the word “synergistic”, even if you were being sarcastic. That’s just WRONG. shudder I even had a hard time typing it in this response.

  • Chris

Hey, it wasn’t me. I’m not sure who that is, but they did use the word. I’m voting “lynching,” but I’m open to mob rule on this one — why don’t we interface on it and enact a proactive strategy for the circumstance?

  • Pegs

Oh my gosh, they have assimilated you.

  • charling

Seriously, Chris, that is pretty scary.
